Health Authorities Claim Some Relief likely from Post floods diseases in Mumbai

Mumbai, Aug 15.The health authorities and the state administration of Maharastra who have been under severe criticism for their inadequate handling of the Mumbai floods are now under defensive and are controlling the damage already done to their image//.

The health authorities have reported fewer admissions of new patients Monday as the outbreak of deadly post-floods diseases such as leptospirosis and dengue showed signs of abating.

The government-run hospitals say the situation is likely to become completely normal over the next few days with the end of the incubation period for most of the waterborne diseases.

Up to 170 people have died in the past 10 days, most of them from the densely populated city suburbs worst affected by last month's floods, of leptospirosis, dengue, malaria and gastric diseases. Hospital sources, however, say that the actual death toll could be much higher as most of the casualties in private hospitals have not been reported to the civic agencies struggling to contain the outbreak.
