Have green tea to prevent prostate cancer

Italian scientists have found out that having green tea catechins for a year could prevent the incidence of cancer of prostate gland in males.//

Of the 32 people who were at high risk of having cancer of the prostate gland, only one person developed the cancer. They all had been having oral administrations of green tea catechins (GTC). While the property of green tea catechins or a component of green tea called EGCG had been suspected to prevent cancer of various cells, this is the first time it had been tested clinically to establish the effectiveness of the chemical.

The study subjects were in the age group of 45 to 75 yrs, with high-grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia. This is a condition of pre-malignant lesions that precede invasive prostate cancer within a year in nearly one third of the cases. There are generally no treatments for such cases. The subjects were all given 200 mg of GTCs daily for a year.

Green tea catechins and their antioxidants were for a long time related to cancer preventive properties. Green tea is a common beverage for the Chinese people who have the lowest incidence of any kind of cancer.

The researchers had presented their report in the 96th Annual Meeting of American Association for Cancer Research.
