Haryana’s Novel Initiative have Increased Institutional Childbirth

The Haryana government's move to set up 'delivery huts' to provide safe and hygienic conditions for childbirth in rural areas has doubled the number of institutional// deliveries, thus helping decrease maternal and child mortality rates too.

Stating this here Tuesday, Principal Secretary (Health) Urvashi Gulati said that the percentage of institutional deliveries after the opening of delivery huts had gone up from 23 percent in 2005 to over 48 percent this year.

She said that 328 delivery huts had already been established across the state since the scheme was launched September last year while the target is to establish 500 huts by 2007.

Gulati said that 10,271 deliveries carried out in these huts had shown that people were wholeheartedly supporting the scheme.

She said that the concept of delivery huts aimed at providing hygienic, women-friendly and safe conditions for delivery within an easy reach of the people in rural areas.

She added that this would help decrease maternal mortality, infant mortality and morbidity rates.

Gulati said that complicated and high-risk deliveries were not being done at these huts by doctors and auxiliary nursing midwifes (ANMs) and were referred to higher health institutions.
