Happiness in the wake of quake: 7,000 births every month

Encountering another problem after relief work in quake affected areas the United Nations (UN) has revealed that there is a shortage of female health workers and doctors in the quake-hit areas. // The pressure is felt that 80,000 women were pregnant and approximately 7,000 new births were taking place every month.

Expressing concern UNFPA country representative Dr France Donny said that 90 percent of the deliveries in the affected areas were still being carried out at homes, which risked human health.

There are efforts underway by Dr Donny to convince religious leaders that pregnant women should be allowed treatment by male doctors in case of emergency.

The concern was that women in the quake-hit areas were exposed to high risk, adding that about 50 women died a day because of pregnancy complications in the country.

Jan Vademoortele said: “Women go to see only a female doctor. So there are a lot of unattended health problems.” He has said that the proposed deadline of March 31 was no deadline for vacating tents but it was a voluntary act.

“A couple of months ago we feared a second wave of deaths. It has not happened but we remain vigilant,” said Vandemoortele.

So relief efforts are underway and the agencies are working towards rehabilitation of the quake affected people.
