Doctors have revealed that there has been a marked increase in allergic reactions among people who use hair dye, which has increased eight times during a 30 year period.// Teenagers appear to be more susceptible, as they are seen sporting different hair colors, in keeping with a trend.

The common allergic reactions are rashes, facial swelling and dermatitis. In extreme cases, hospital admission may be required.

Now researchers are pressing for a wider debate about the safety of hair dyes.

A recent insight in Japan has revealed the extent of allergic reactions amongst teenage girls; nearly 13% of them and 6/% of women in their twenties are suffering severe allergic reactions to hair dyes.

"Cultural and commercial pressures to dye hair and perhaps the obsession with the culture of youth are increasing the burden on the health services," the authors say.
