Hail the Tamiflu and Shun the Scam

New Zealand’s broiler poultry flock escapes the deadly avian influenza virus while plans are in place to vaccinate the native birds if there is an outbreak// of the dangerous form of bird flu. Dr. Thonton said that other bird species were being checked for evidence of infection with the avian influenza virus.

The highly pathogenic bird flu virus, which killed 132 Asians, was the H5N1 strain in the year 2003.It remains difficult for humans to contact the infection unless mutation of the strain can lead to more virulent forms, in the event of which a pandemic is likely to occur fear experts. Members of the community have been asked to report in case of large numbers of dead or sick birds as this an indicator of the likely virus infection.

A warning has been issued against those who trying to exploit the situation by offering products which were claimed to be effective against the virus. The only effective and scientifically proven drug is the Tamiflu, which has been approved by the FDA.

So, the need of the hour is to screen for evidence of infection in wild birds and to treat with Tamiflu as and when the need arises.
