HIV Graph for the State Dips

The HIV Sentinel Surveillance data for 2005 shows the prevalence curve dipping to reach an all-time low of 0.5 % in the state.// According to the latest study that was conducted by the Tamil Nadu State AIDS Control Society claims that the prevalence among antenatal women has fallen to 0.5 %.

The study was conducted among 69 sites comprising 24 district headquarters hospitals, 29 first referral units, 5 private nursing homes and 5 sites for women aged 15-24 years. State Health Secretary, Sheela Rani Chunkath has asked the Central governments support to take the state out of the current high HIV prevalence status.

There is an increase among the HIV rates in the areas close to National Highways but near the east coast region there exists a low prevelance ratio. Namakkal continues to be the highest prevalence district with a figure of 2.15 %, followed by Erode (1.34).

There is about 0.50 % of the urban population who have been tested positive on the other hand about 0.58% in the rural area. Epidemiologists say the drop in prevalence rates is due to a higher level of safety in sexual behavior and the awareness programs about the dangers of the disease.
