HIV Drug Apparently Useful In Cervical Cancer

Researchers at the University of Manchester say that a commonly used HIV drug may be useful against cervical cancer as well. Lopinavir, the HIV drug, //could be used in prevention of the cancer and could be developed into an anti-cancer cream.

Dr Ian Hampson and his colleagues said that such a cream could prove to be an alternative to surgery for women with precancerous lesions. However no clinical trials have begun as yet.

The preliminary results of the study are due for publication in September's issue of the journal Anti-Viral Therapy. They will also be presented at the International HPV meeting in Prague on September 5.
