HIV/AIDS Throws Family Relationships Out Of Gear In Uganda

There is more bad news about effects of HIV/AIDS. According to a report by NPR titled “All Things Considered”, Ugandan Families are in the throes of troubled family ties.

Most Family structures in Uganda have crumbled simply because, more than 100,000 // young Ugandan adults have succumbed to aids-related complexities in the last decade. Deborah Kaijuka, CEO of the Uganda Reach the Aged Association, is of the opinion that family structures in Uganda that always functioned like extended families stand disrupted because of AIDS related Deaths. According to Kaijuka, in strict contrast with the past, it is now common to observe elderly residents living in isolation or as caretakers of small children (often their own grand children). Having lost the breadwinners to the clutches of AIDS, Older Ugandan residents are quite an unlucky lot, unable to live their dreams of being cared by their children and are left to combat the challenges of old age all by themselves.
