HIV/AIDS Awareness Info through Barber Shops, Salons

A Wilmington-based HIV/AIDS community outreach program in Delaware has thought of an offbeat salon approach to enhance awareness on HIV/AIDS.//

Its “Do the Right Thing 4Life” program—supported by AIDS Delaware provides information on HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment, as well as condoms, to people via the participating barbershops and beauty salons.

Do the Right Thing 4Life—founded by Frank Hawkins, director of education and community outreach for AIDS, Delaware, to provide blacks with HIV/AIDS information—aims to increase awareness of HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases, encourage safer sexual behavior such as condom use to prevent HIV transmission, encourage HIV testing, and promote discussion of the epidemic.

Hawkins has enrolled five salons and shops in Wilmington in the program and hopes to expand the program throughout New Castle County, Delaware.
