Gynaecological Society Has Sought a Ban on Illegal Sale of Sperms

A gynaecological society has demanded a ban on the illegal sale of sperms allegedly being carried out by infertility clinics across India// .

The Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI) has said the large-scale direct sale of donor sperms, without tests and checks by sperm banks, was a serious matter and required urgent government intervention.

At its 18th conference in Kanpur this week, FOGSI also asked the government to draw up guidelines and rules for safe abortions, which it said was turning into a major source of infertility and gynaecological problems. FOGSI president-elect Narendra Malhotra told IANS that although the government had legalised abortions, it was necessary to ensure - through legal provisions or guidelines - that abortions are carried out safely and under proper clinical conditions.

Speaking at a workshop on infertility, B.N. Chakravorty of Kolkata said that changing lifestyles, fast food and late marriages were causing infertility in couples.

Prakash Trivedi, chairman of the Indian Infertility and Test Tube Baby Centre of Mumbai, said his studies had confirmed that of the 100 cases of infertility, in at least 15 the sperm count was zero.
