The rescue teams involved in the tedious process of finding survivors of the Gujarat quake, from below the rubble, are fast giving up hope of finding any more survivors. They are now concentrating in clearing the rubble and saving the injured who have been lucky to be saved so far. A miracle baby was saved after nearly 90 hours under the rubble. The baby was 8 months old and was seen holding on to the dead body of its mother. The baby survived with minor injuries.
Elsewhere the disturbing scenario of lawlessness raised its ugly head in the form of looting of the quake hit areas. In the ghost town of Bhuj, anti social elements went on a looting spree of abandoned houses, which were ravaged by the quake. Police patrolling has been intensified in Bhuj and surrounding areas.
Monks belonging to a Hindu religious group have started handing out cups of cooked vegetable and rice to a never-ending queue of quake victims. Doctors and other volunteers are still arriving at Gujarat to help ease the pain of the victims of India’s worst quake ever.
The prime minister of India, Atal Behari Vajpayee, has announced that a special tax proposal will be introduced to help the state of Gujarat tide over this calamity and the union home minister, Lal Krishna Advani went on record to say that damages might be to the tune of ten thousand crore rupees and upwards.
Meanwhile people from all over the country are still pooling money, clothes, footwear, bedding, provisions and medicines to the victims of the quake. It is only in such situations that we rally behind each and help unknown faces come out of their misery. Let the good work continue.
