Govt Proposes, Medicos Disposes, Strike To Intensify

In a fresh bid to end the anti-reservation medicos strike in India, the government on Sunday night proposed to examine their key demand for an experts committee on quota in central educational institutes// but the students and doctors rejected the overture and decided to intensify the agitation by calling a bandh in Delhi on May 31.

On a day of hectic negotiations, the medicos held talks with Federal Minister Oscar Fernandes who followed it up with a meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh after which the government came out with an eight-point offer in writing which included examining the setting up of the experts committee and raising the retirement age of faculty members of government medical institutions.

The government also assured that no disciplinary action would be taken against the strikers.

After the 90-minute meeting with the Prime Minister, Fernandes handed over the government's offers to the medicos at a brief late evening meeting.

However, Youth For Equality, spearheading the 16-day agitation, rejected the government's proposal to examine the demand for an exerts committee saying no timeframe was given.

'Our demand for an expert committee has not been met. The government has just said it will examine the demand but when and how is not clear. There is no clear timeframe given,' Dr Neha Gandhi, a resident doctor of Maulana Azad Medical College and a spokesperson of the Youth For Equality told PTI after half an hour meeting of medicos among themselves.

Vinod Patro, President of AIIMS Resident Doctors' Association, said they would observe a medical bandh on May 31 in the national capital.
