Government’s Latest Proposal Under Fire from IM

The government’s latest proposal to reserve another 27 per cent seats in medical colleges for other backward classes (OBCs) has come under fire// from the Indian Medical Association. This is in addition to the already existing 22.5 percent for SC and ST.

They have opposed it saying that further reservation for the backward classes would only affect the quality of medical care in India. Plans have been made to call the attention of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss in this matter.

A meeting of all IMA state presidents and secretaries has also been called for April 30, 2006 to decide the proper course of action.

According to the IMA with the new policy the number of seats based on merit would decrease further.

At present the All India Pre Medical Test has about 2.5 lakh students competing for just 1500 seats.
