According to the recent survey it was found that Britons are Europe's top drinkers in bars and restaurants. The report from the market watchers Datamonitor// said that they consumed the equivalent of 2.2 pints of lager. Germans and Spaniards drank the equivalent of 1.9 pints, followed by the Swedes who were the most abstemious at 1.5 pints, below the European average of 1.8 pints. But when analyzed about the alcohol consumption outside the home it revealed that the levels of public drinking in Britain are falling. Total bar and restaurant sales of alcohol in Britain fell to 251 million litres last year from 272 million litres in 2000.

This shows a reduction of around 8 %. It was noted that now more and more Britons switch to drinking alcohol at home. It has become a homely affair John Band, Datamonitor analyst and author of the report said that due to this licensing laws were relaxed in England and Wales. A third of pubs opted to stay open an hour or so after the traditional 11 p.m. closing time. The government hopes the relaxation will reduce the incidence of binge-drinking, as they tend to drink more when they consume alcohol in their homes.
