Government Plans to Set Up Mobile Dispensaries in States

Mobile dispensaries will do the rounds of rural areas as part of a government plan to reach healthcare to the needy and marginalized populations. //

The government has released initial funds to the tune of Rs. 1.5 billion to states to set up mobile medical units in rural areas.

According to a health ministry document, these funds have been given under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) scheme for 2006-07.

The document, tabled in parliament, shows that Maharashtra proposes mobile medical units for 33 districts in the state. The state has also a plan to convert 172 flying medical squads currently functioning in the tribal areas into mobile dispensaries.

"Under NRHM, states and union territories will have one mobile medical units in every district for taking health care to the people especially in difficult to reach areas. AS per the proposals received, funds have been released for 18 states," said the document.

Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Rajasthan, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal are among the 18 states, which have received initial funds.

Goa, Haryana, Punjab, Bihar, Jharkhand and all the seven union territories including Delhi are yet to receive the fund. Among the northeastern states only Sikkim is yet to receive any fund outlay.
