To overcome the scarcity of doctors in rural areas, the Goa government today made it mandatory for students passing out of state-run medical colleges// to serve in such regions for five years, Chief Minister Pratapsingh Rane said.

The state cabinet decided that authorities would invoke the bond to be signed by the medical students to serve in government units for five years, he told reporters after the cabinet meeting.

"There is a bond signed by them during their admission to the course ... This bond was never invoked. Since there is scarcity of doctors in rural Goa, we will invoke the bond. They will have to pay a certain amount if they breach the bond," Rane added.

The state government-run medical colleges Goa Dental College and Goa Medical Colleges are situated at Bambolim, on the city outskirts. "All the students passing out will have to take up a government job within six months," Rane said.

Goa's Chief Secretary J P Singh said the medicos would be taken on a contract basis for five years and the government was thinking of allowing them to do private practice also during this period.
