Glucose Boosts Memory Retention

Leigh Riby researcher at the Glasgow Caledonian University said that an increased glucose level stimulates the brain’s capacity to make new memories and recall old ones. But on the other hand health officials and// dentists condemn these drinks, which have increased sugar levels.

A group of psychologists said that a single drink high in glucose content has found to increase memory levels by 20%.

The researcher said that he instructs his students to go in for an energy drink before attending his lectures. This helps the students to take in more information.

The mechanism behind the increase brain activity is that when more amount of glucose is taken the brain receives increased glucose, thereby activating the cells of the hippocampus area, which triggers the memory activity.

The study enrolled 25 participants between the age group 15-52. They were asked to drink flavored water containing 25g of sugar or a can of coca cola. The results showed that the participants who drank sugar solution were able to remember 11% more than those who had a can of coke.

But there are other disadvantages in giving people increased sugar hence the researchers have devised a new technique to release the natural sugar reserves from the body. This can be very useful for the adults who suffer from reduced memory retention.

David Conway working at Glasgow University elaborated the risks associated with the increased sugar consumption and hence said that an increase in the sugar level can be established at regular meals and thereby give time for the recovery of teeth.
