Glucocorticoid in ‘bad Light’ During Fertility Treatmet

Netherlands – Recent findings by Dutch researchers suggest that the hormone glucocorticoids may not be as beneficial as it is thought to be//. The steroid is prescribed by many specialists as a thrust to infertility treatments in women.

The steroid hormones called glucocorticoids are employed by many specialists to treat infertility, as they are thought to influence the body’s immune responses in a good manner. They are used to sensitize the lining of the uterus so that embryo implantation can take place without a hitch.

To probe, researchers drew a parallel between success rates of expectant mothers who took glucocorticoids to aid embryo implantation and those who did not. The analysis carefully followed data from 13 studies involving 1,759 couples.

The researchers found when assisted reproductive technologies were used in combination with glucocorticoid treatment; the pregnancy rates did not show any improvement. What is worse is the threat that glucocorticoids may cause certain infections or even be the cause of premature births.

Researchers inferred, “This meta-analysis shows that empirical use of glucocorticoids is not supported by evidence from studies. Moreover, we don't know enough about the possible adverse effects of glucocorticoids in early pregnancy. Therefore, at present, glucocorticoids should not be prescribed in this way."
