Sunderland: Red, normally associated with danger, is also the color of blood, signaling perpetuation of Life. Hospitals are in need of nearly 8,000 units// of blood on a daily basis to cater to patients who are critically in need of blood. The Footballers of Sunderland have set the ball rolling, campaigning and urging people to donate blood that will surely offset shortages, especially during the run-up to Easter.

Take the case of Joan Goodwin, a grand Old lady, who considers herself young enough to donate blood. The record of her blood donations can make your blood warm. She has clocked 77 blood donations spanning 43 years and is all excited to race forward for the 100th record! At 61, she is still raring to visit blood donation centers- recently, she has been honored by the National Blood service for her ceaseless spirit to noble cause .Presently, she is also actively involved in the campaign to urge more people to come forward and donate blood.

Joan’s sentimental urgings to the people are "It costs you nothing apart from a bit of time and a little bit of effort. I know that I'm helping people. If you're giving blood for the Bank Holiday Weekend, you never know, you might need it yourself. Giving blood is nothing, in my opinion, and it must in lot of other people otherwise they wouldn't keep on doing it. It's no big deal."

Joan joins the committed group of nearly thousands of blood donors who are doing an extremely noble act of helping to save lives. Nearly 75 units of blood are required by hospitals in Sunderland every day for their life-saving tasks.

Vicki Hutchinson, of the National Blood Service, said: "Blood and blood products are used to help hundreds of people everyday so we are asking donors to please help us ensure there is enough blood to treat everyone who needs it over Easter."
