Germany Institutes Tough Measures To Tackle Bird Flu

Germany is on high alert after it was confirmed that the dreaded bird flu had made an entry into neighboring Poland. Germans had panicked after it was confirmed that a cat had died of bird flu. Since then the country has instituted a series of measures to ward off the disease. // Federal Agriculture and Protection of Consumer Minister Horst Seehofer has said that cats in the region of the bird flu will be kept inside homes, while it is compulsory to keep dogs on leashes. Entering and leaving poultry farms is strictly banned. Federal Health Minister Ulla Schmidt has also said that there will be a high-level meeting to discuss measures to tackle his menace. Although only 171 human cases of bird flu have been confirmed across the globe, experts believe that if the H5N1 virus mutates, it will spread quickly from person to person and trigger a pandemic claiming millions of casualties. Bird flu has now been confirmed in most European countries.
