Gastric bypass can cause deficiency of Vitamin A

New York: A study initiated by U.S. researchers on the medical histories of patients not genetically disposed to blindness //, but were either blind or suffered weak eyesight, revealed that they had undergone stomach/intestine related surgeries, which could have caused Vitamin A deficiency, leading to poor eyesight or even blindness. This report is available in the latest issue of the British Journal of Ophthalmology.

The study analyzed three patients aged above 65, who were found to have vitamin A deficiency and have had a surgery related to the intestines during the previous two or three decades. It was observed that the patients despite taking Vitamin A supplements suffered from poor vision. The only remedy and silver lining lies in the intramuscular injections of vitamin A that showed remarkable improvements in the eyesight within days of giving the injections.
