GERD Not Caused By Swallowing Air

Researchers at Sint Antonius Hospital in Nieuwegein, the Netherlands say that although people suffering from gastroesophageal reflex disease// (GERD) swallow air and belch more frequently, air swallowing does not play any role in the disease.

In order to test whether air swallowing had any role in GERD, researchers calculated pressure, liquid and acidity in the esophagus of 12 people with GERD and 12 healthy individuals. GERD sufferers belched 52 times during 24 hours, while the healthy individuals had only 7 instances.

Dr. Albert J. Bredenoord and colleagues said in the American Journal of Gastroenterology that acid in the esophagus closes the stomach when air is infused into it, when the excess air enters stomach it is released in the form of a burp.

But Researchers said it is not clear why GERD sufferers swallow more air.
