Funds Allocated To Prevent Transmission of HIV From Mother To Child

The National AIDS Control Programme (NACP) of India, has come up with another project. This scheme named "Prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV/AIDS" //is expected to cost Rs 342.81-crores.

The Global Fund aids the financial assistance for this scheme.

The fund will also be spent for reducing the transmission of HIV to women from their partners and to provide HIV/AIDS care including antiretroviral therapy to those already infected.

There is a 35 per cent chance of HIV transmission from a HIV positive mother to her child if no preventative action is taken.15-20 percent of babies born to such mothers are infected during pregnancy, 50 per cent during delivery and 33 per cent through breastfeeding.

In India, 38 % of women get infected from their regular partner who has been infected through sex. Mother-to-child HIV transmission is the second major factor that spreads the disease.

The vast majority of HIV-infected pregnant women in India cannot afford the anti-retroviral drugs and in some places they are not available. The government now plans to focus in this area.
