Frozen fish is costly and also lacks vital nutrients

Supermarkets provide a wide range of frozen Atlantic salmon and grilled fillets. Frozen fish meals are preferred by the elderly, single and those less gifted in the kitchen. //

A new Australian survey has found that these frozen fish meals are missing out on vital nutrients and forking out more money.

The findings were published in the magazine Choice. The supermarkets have only frozen white fish either hoki or hake and does not give any choice to the customers.

More than 50 different products were found on the shelves in major supermarkets which mainly contained crumbed and battered products.

These contained a low percentage of fish thereby a reduced amount of essential omega-3 fats.

Omega-3 fats are polyunsaturated fats found especially in fish which has the ability to lower the chance of heart disease.

It is also essential in the development of the central nervous system in babies before and after they're born. Doctors advice pregnant women and nursing mothers to include more amounts of fish in their diet due to its Omega-3 fat content.

But the researchers found that a healthy dose of these fats are found in fresh oily fish such as salmon from the local fish and chip shop or supermarket deli.

On the other hand one has to consume a minimum of six serves or more of the frozen meal per day to get the normal amount of omega-3s from a product. A visit to the local fish and chip shop would save money.

This is because the price per kilos actually worked out cheaper than buying most frozen products. There was also a bigger variety of fish available which could be cooked in different methods.
