Former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar today died in the Apollo Hospital of the city. He was suffering from Multiple Myeloma, a cancer of the plasma cell and was admitted in May after his health condition deteriorated.
Chandra Shekar, a MA from the Allahabad Universtiy, is survived by two sons. He was born on July 1, 1927.
He was a Member of Parliament from Ballia Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh.
Currently, he was representing the Samajwadi Janata Party in the Lower House.
He held the office of Prime Minister for only seven months. He resigned on March 6, 1991.
Chandra Shekhar started his political carrier as a secretary of Praja Socialist Party (P.S.P.) of Ballia District.
In 1962 he was elected to the Rajya Sabha, in the year 1967, he held the post of General Secretary of the Congress Parliamentary Party.
In 1977, in the first election held after the emergency, he was elected to the seventh Lok Sabha.
He was the president of the Janata Party from 1977 to 1978.
In 1980 and 1983 he was elected consecutively to the Lower House.
Besides being the Prime Minister for a short span, Chandra Shekhar was the Union Minster for various departments during 1989 to 1991.
Even being a member of the Central Election Committee and Working Committee of All India Congress Committee (Indira).
(A.I.C.C.(I)), he was arrested under Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) during the 1975-emergency.
He has authored two books "Meri Jail Diary" and "Dynamics of Social Change" in Hindi and English respectively.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and several political leaders have expressed their condolences.
