For a Better Memory

Is mom or dad left-handed? How about siblings? If so, you might have a better memory for events -- no matter what hand you favour. The key lies in a part of the brain called the corpus callosum, which seems to be larger and more developed in folks with a family history of left-handedness, says study author Steven Christman. //

The corpus callosum is the large bundle of nerve fibers that connects the two sides of our brain and is one of the last major brain structures to mature. A larger corpus callosum allows for more and better communication between both halves of the brain.

Memory is divided into two categories. The first type is called semantic or implicit memory. We don't really remember things as much as we just know them. The second type of memory is known as episodic memory. We remember not only a fact, but how and when we learned that fact.

This research has great potential for helping stroke victims, as well as those who suffer with dementia and even Alzheimer's disease.
