Foot and Mouth Raises Its Ugly Head in Vietnam

Nearly half of Vietnam is reeling under the onslaught of Foot-and-mouth disease. The disease has not spared parts of China, Laos and Cambodia and reports say that only a small portion of the cattle// and pigs are affected by the disease.

"The situation is under control and not as dangerous as avian flu," said Vu Ngoc Tien, programme assistant at the U.N.'s Food and Agriculture Organisation in Hanoi. "There have not been a big number of cases detected so far."

It is estimated that nearly 30,300 cattle and pigs have got sick because of the disease.

This has caused a flutter in the already affected agricultural sectors, that is scared-chicken owing to the avian flu influence. The Agriculture Ministry has embargoed the movement of livestock and products and suitable check points have been instituted.
