Flying Returns from Long-haul Flights – Jet Lag and Health Ris

The effect of repeated long-haul flights on air crew is hazardous, scientists have warned. Female crew who are exposed to frequent jet lag// complain of menstrual irregularities, mood swings, and many such problems that could stand in the way of good health.

The body’s routine cycles get disturbed upon frequent travel across different time zones. The body’s cycles are regulated by the clock mechanism in the brain which is directly linked to the body's core temperature. This is why during waking hours, the body temperature increases, while during sleep, the body temperature dips.

Scientists are of the opinion that long haul flights across three time zones or less is still ok; but anything more than this would pose grave risk to health. It is wrong to assume that air crew on long haul flights are resistant to the effects of jet lag. It is imperative that such flyers are given adequate recovery period, equivalent to two-thirds of the time zones crossed.
