Five patients die amid Bihar doctors' strike

Patna, July 16 (IANS) Five patients have died amid a strike by junior doctors at the Patna Medical College// and Hospital (PMCH), which entered its third day Saturday crippling medical services.

Two patients died Saturday while three others died Friday, sources said. Hundreds of patients, mostly poor people who have come for treatment from across state, are passing tense days.

"We are the real victims of the strike because there is no doctor to attend to patients," said Mahesh Mahto who came from Nawada three days ago to admit his daughter in the hospital.

Similarly, Mohammad Karim was worried about his wife, who is a patient there: "No doctor, no nurse to give injection to the patients...What more can I say, we are at the mercy of god."

The junior doctors began an indefinite strike Thursday to protest forcible evictions from hostels meant for nurses following a Patna High Court directive to drive away illegal occupants.

The junior doctors said they would continue the strike till the authorities made alternate arrangements for their accommodation or enhanced their allowance so they could live on their own outside the hospital campus.

Ironically, nurses in the hospital called off their six-day-old strike Friday after the administration agreed to meet their demands.
