Fish is good for Alzheimer's patients

Researchers of Department of Veterans Affairs, USA, had found that a diet// rich in docosahexenoic acid (DHA), which is found in cold-water fish, could significantly lower the progress of the Alzheimer's disease.

DHA is one of the omega-3 fatty acids and already is well known for beneficial effects in preventing cardiac disease, cancer etc. and is recommended to be included in the diets. Fish had been what for generations been called the food that develops the brain, and it just got the scientific approval for being labeled the same.

The researchers, who had created genetically altered mice with Alzheimer's disease, had fed rats with diet rich in DHA. When compared against the rats with the disease and without the fortified diet, rats that were fed food with DHA had a 70% less build up of amyloid protein in their brain. This happened after a period of three to five months of feeding them the fortified chow. When taken as equivalent to human life, this will approximate to about a few years of human life.

Amyloid protein build up in the brain causes plaques that lead to development of Alzheimer's diseases.
