Fish Oil - Foils Cognitive Decline

Fish is in trouble once again. Researchers have given us adequate reasons to make fish a part of our// regular diet. Omega-3 fatty acids, the most popular component in fish has always hogged the spotlight for its health benefits.

Two recent studies conducted by Dutch researchers suggest that Omega -3 rich seafood could protect against age-connected cognitive-decline. During the study, researchers evaluated the diet and cognitive function of 210 men, between the ages of 70 to 89. They did not suffer Alzheimer's disease. The study was conducted on the subjects at two stages - once in 1995 and the second time in 1999.

The finding revealed the extended benefits due to consumption of fish, atleast 400 milligrams of omega-3 fatty acids on a daily basis, which could delay decline in cognitive functions.

In the second study, American researchers evaluated omega-3 intake and cognitive decline in 2,251 white males, in the age group of 50 to 65 years. The study did not find any apparent connection between levels of omega-3 fatty acids in the men and cognitive decline in general. Detailed analysis revealed that omega-3 fatty acids did protect against reduction in verbal abilities.

This link was more pronounced in men with high blood pressure and dyslipidemia, but in those suffering acute depression, the link was not obvious. The research is published in the current issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
