Chief Minister Manik Sarkar inaugurated the Tripura Medical College Sunday here to become the first privately run medical college-cum-hospital in India's northeastern// region.
"Tripura Medical College, promoted by Global Educational Net (GENET) in collaboration with the state government, is the first public private partnership (PPP) model in the healthcare education in India," said K. Balachandran Nair, chairman-cum-managing director, Universal Empire Group (UEG), a Kerala based trust. GENET is a sister organization of UEG.
With the establishment of the medical college, the state capital has also achieved the remarkable distinction of being the only city in the northeastern region to have two medical colleges. The state run Tripura government Medical College started functioning last year.
"The Rs.1.54 billion Tripura Medical College, which also has a 500-bed hospital, is the single largest private investment in healthcare education in the region," Nair claimed.
Earlier the Medical Council of India and the union ministry of health and family welfare had already given permission for admitting 100 students for the current academic year.
Out of total intake capacity of 100 students, 25 students are already nominated by the state government as per the agreement signed in October last year.
The institute will also have students from neighbouring countries, especially from Bangladesh.
The GENET will also set up a 200-beded super specialty hospital in the medical college complex at Hapania, outskirts of the capital city.
