Research has always backed moderate detox diets which help in maintaining weight and a healthy lifestyle. On the same breath, experts warn that detox kits comprising of herbal// laxatives and diuretics are superfluous with no proven benefits.

The best way to detox, experts say, is to avoid alcohol as a temporary measure to freshen up the kidneys and liver. They also recommend consumption of fruits and vegetables to pump the body with more antioxidants. Drinking lots of water and consuming less fat and sugar, is a good way to detox.

Nutritionist and dietician Catherine Saxelby examined some of the detox kits presently available and she said, "They are expensive and they only work if they have laxative or diuretic ingredients. I think a detox works well because people think that they've eaten and drunk too much and want to do something about it. They don't have to think long-term, so it's achievable.''

Detoxification in moderation is fine as extreme detoxes can actually retard metabolism and spark off vitamin deficiency apart from slowing down the body’s metabolism.

Ms Saxelby recommends eating salads, grains, oats, brown rice, legumes, and pasta as a detoxification diet instead of completely doing away with food groups.
