Fatigue, Prevalent Among Patients Treated For Breast Cancer

A recent study conducted by Julienne E. Bower, Ph.D. of the University of California at Los Angeles and colleagues showed that fatigue is very much prevalent among breast cancer survivors. //

The study interviewed 763 women after they had undergone breast cancer surgery and asked them to fill in questionnaires. The study revealed shocking results that one third of the women suffer from fatigue up to ten years after surgery and diagnosis.

This condition is seen if these women are suffering from other diseases like cardiovascular problems and depressive disorders and women who have undergone combined radiation and chemotherapy.

Though fatigue is associated with many illnesses it cannot b pointed out that it is due to breast cancer surgery. The reasons are no clear and it is thought to be linked with the treatment modalities, pain, heart disease, other associated disease and psychological feelings etc.

During the study the data revealed that every 1 out of 3 women who had undergone breast cancer surgery had fatigue as major sign. It is the first longitudinal study to investigate the problem of fatigue in women and the risk factors.

In conclusion the authors said that the research pointed out the resilience of breast cancer survivors. She also included that persistent fatigue was observed in very few cases of women who had undergone cancer diagnosis and treatment.
