FMD tests at abattoir

Tests for Foot and Mouth disease (FMD) were carried out at the abattoir where the 2001 outbreak started. Restrictions were lifted after the tests on pigs proved// negative at the Cheale Meats slaughterhouse, near Brentwood, Essex.

In order to prevent the possible spread of FMD, the movement of the farm animals within a five-mile radius of the slaughterhouse had been restricted.

Debby Reynolds, chief veterinary officer for Defra, said: “Samples have been taken on Thursday and submitted to the Institute for Animal Health.”

Ms Reynolds said today: “Further negative laboratory test results for foot and mouth disease and swine vesicular disease mean that restrictions have been lifted on the slaughterhouse and the farm the pigs originated from.”
