U.S. obstetricians groups suggests that Pregnant women and those trying to become pregnant should avoid taking antidepressants like Paxil due to the risk of birth defects// This warning was laid down by American College of Obstetricians and was published as an opinion in the December issue of the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology.

FDA and GloxoSmithKline had reclassified the drugs to reflect new studies a year ago, which showed the drug poses risk to the fetus and in March, Health Canada issued a warning to pregnant women stating that those who took SSRIs may increase the risk for serious complications at birth.

The obstetricians said that other drugs including Prozac, Zoloft and Lexapro has been linked with short-term complications in newborns and will be reviewed on an individual basis.
