FDA Moves In To Check Listeria

A permanent injunction is sought by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) against the seafood processing company Pacific Shellfish, and its President Judd J. Brown. // This will effectively stop the company from producing, selling, and exporting its products. The company's ready-to-eat fish is reported to be contaminated, as a result of which this measure has been initiated.

The inspections conducted by the FDA in 2004 and 2005 have revealed that the disease-causing bacterium Listeria monocytogenes (Listeria) has been discovered in the products of the company, in addition to the unsanitary conditions prevalent at the company's facilities. The company has not implemented the corrective measures it had promised, according to the FDA.

Listeria may be fatal for unborn babies, pregnant women, and newborns, in addition to people whose immune systems are impaired. Sufficient sanitation measures have to be initiated to check the spread of this infection, even though it can be eliminated during the process of cooking. Ready-to-eat foods can easily be contaminated by this infection.
