FDA Approves New Osteoporosis Drug

There is good news for women suffering from postmenopausal osteoporosis. The Food and Drug Administration of America // has approved a new drug Boniva (ibandronate sodium) manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline and Roche for people suffering from osteoporosis. The drug to be taken monthly under the advice from the physician will help in bone building, even if its results may not be felt directly.

Osteoporosis is the disease that makes the bone brittle and is the cause of hip and other fractures that may lead to permanent disability, and at times even death. The spinal cord may start collapsing leading to a stooped posture, chronic pain etc. It is a condition that may arise due to a variety of factors like genetic, physiological, dietary and age. Osteoporosis is most common is women in their post menopause age, although en above 50yrs are also at a risk.

The new drug Boniva may be taken to treat osteoporosis in women after menopause. The drug may increase the bone mass by slowing the bone degeneration in women who take it. However the drug need to be taken under medical practitioner’s guidance and may not work if the treatment is stopped.
