FDA Approves New Drug For Asthma In Children

FDA has approved a new inhaler therapy for children with asthma called Asmanex Twisthaler 220 mcg to be taken only once daily// .

The oral inhalation treatment may take about 1 to 2 weeks or longer after starting the treatment for the maximum effect to take place. The medication provides topical effect to systematic activity in extensive hepatic metabolism. A maintenance treatment for asthma suffering children in the age group of 12 yrs and above, the drug may also be used for adult patients who require oral corticosteroids. These patients will require lesser doses of corticosteroids or stopping of the steroid based treatment after the start of the treatment with Asmanex Twisthaler. However, as a side effect of the treatment, usage of the inhaler may cause allergic reactions like rhinitis, conjunctivitis, and eczema that were previously suppressed by the corticosteroid treatment.

Other effects may be withdrawal symptoms from corticosteroids like joint pains, muscular pain, depression, although there will be marked improvement in the respiratory function. The study was done with 146 patients in the age group of 12 to 16 yrs who received the Asmanex Twisthaler treatment. The results were consistent for all ages and did not show any difference in responses for various age groups.
