FDA has approved the first generic version of the AIDS drug Retrovir (AZT). This generic drug// is manufactured by Ranbaxy Laboratories. Due to patent laws it will not be able to market this anti-retroviral drug in US, but it will be available for patients in the developing countries, it will be made available for purchase and use abroad under the president’s emergency plan for AIDS Relief. This President’s emergency plan for AIDS relief was announced in 2003, by President George W. Bush, which provides $15 billion over five years to fight HIV/AIDS around the world, especially for the underdeveloped countries, to the world’s 15 hardest-hit countries, most of them in Africa.

"This action ... adds yet another valuable product to the growing list of effective and safe quality medicines available ... for purchase under the President's Emergency Plan," Murray Lumpkin, the FDA's Acting Deputy Commissioner, said in a release.
