Eye-opener for Stroke Victims Suffering Partial Vision Loss

Scotland: Many thousands of stroke victims suffer vision difficulties due to cortical blindness. Scientists in Aberdeen have conceived //a device that holds immense promise for patients suffering partial impairment of vision.

According to the Aberdeen researchers, a medical instrument has been devised that is capable of arousing the blind field, the area incapable of sight. This could indeed be the light at the end of the tunnel for stroke patients.

With the help of a computer system that is attached with a visual stimulus, the screen in the homes of 12 stroke patients suffering partial vision loss was bombarded with flashes of light. Patients were asked to execute many tasks; Pressing certain keys when they noticed flickering, and such other tasks. This exercise continued for 90-days. After the period of exercise, the patients portrayed a stronger visual sensitivity in the blind field.

Dr. Arash Sahraie, who led the research team said, "We are very excited about this finding. It could give hope to the thousands of patients who have suffered sight loss following brain damage and are told on a daily basis that nothing can be done.Sahraie adds that. We are already finding that patients report that they can navigate more easily around their home or feel more confident when they are crossing the road."

Scientists expect to engage in additional rounds of testing to prove conclusively that the device is capable of reviving vision loss in stroke victims.
