Experts reject duct tape therapy for warts

Dutch researchers strongly, criticized the practice of using duct tape a strong wide adhesive tape to do away with unattractive lumpy warts //which crop up on skin of hands or feet in schoolchildren.

In a study conducted researchers gathered data which disproves the popularly attested belief that duct tape is helpful in some way to hinder the growth of warts on extremities. Contrary to popular belief the duct tape only works slightly better than a regular corn pad which itself is considered to be a placebo by experts.

Studies showed that although warts of 16% of children who used duct tape had disappeared they also complained of mild to moderate itching and rashes on skin. None of the children who used corn pads complained of any allergic manifestations. Warts crop up due to viral infection and are observed clinically that most disappear on their own.

Other therapies are also used to remove these lumpy irregular out growths such as cryotherapy by which warts are frozen or by external application of salicylic acid locally on the lesion. Simply applying a tape is often less cumbersome than going through the discomfort of cryotherapy or salicylic acid application and this practice of taping the warts with duct tape seems to have caught on with the public often advocated by many sites on the internet without sound foundation.
