Expanded Infant Health Screening

Nearly two-thirds of all babies born in the United States are screened for more than 20 life-threatening disorders//.

Now, the March of Dimes and the American Academy of Pediatrics have endorsed a recommendation from the American College of Medical Genetics calling for expanded screening for 29 disorders, including certain metabolic conditions.

UAB maternal and child health expert Russell Kirby, Ph.D., agrees. “All of these conditions are either fatal or result in potentially serious developmental disabilities or chronic health conditions if untreated. Screening involves more than blood samples and laboratory testing.

A comprehensive public health response includes ensuring infants are referred to and receive specialty care services and more comprehensive diagnostic evaluations, and retesting babies whose test results require follow-up.”
