Exercise experts at the University of Alabama suggest turning back the clock to up your physical activity level. Even small increases of activity could prevent over half of new cases of type 2 diabetes,// one of the major contributors to death from heart disease.

Exercise physiologist Dr. Gary Hunter of the University of Alabama at Birmingham points to our modern way of life as being the major cause of physical inactivity. Modern conveniences, from cars and motorised lawn mowers to computer games and TV encourage too much sitting and lying around. Perhaps, he says, it's time to go back to the old ways - even just for a little while each day.

Walk, don't take the elevator, and push a lawn mower, rather than riding it. There are many more opportunities to get more active by 'turning back the clock'. Just one or two hundred calories extra exercise a day can make a real difference to your health by reducing the risk of obesity, diabetes and heart disease.
