Exercise Both Brain and Brawn to Stay Fighting Fit

If you have made fitness as one of your New Year resolutions, The Alliance for Aging Research// has added a significant dimension to fitness, recommending the importance of both physical as well as mental exercise to stay fighting fit.

Daniel Perry, executive director of the nonprofit Alliance for Aging Research said, "There is a lot we can do to keep our brains healthy and potentially prevent or lessen the cognitive decline that often comes with aging. We are encouraging people to take steps to improve brain health as part of their overall fitness regimen for the New Year."

The Alliance for Aging Research has advised all and sundry to eat food rich in omega-3 fatty acids (fish is one source), protein, antioxidants, fruits and vegetables, carbohydrates and a diet low in trans fats. To stay mentally agile, the agency recommends solving crossword puzzles, or teaching, or even learning a new language. Physical exercise is also a must to keep factors that contribute to dementia like heart disease, stroke and diabetes at bay. Most importantly, leading a stress free life, practicing yoga, having friends and being social is the key to brain health. Smoking, heavy drinking and use of recreational drugs is to be avoided.
