Exclusive Club For HIV /AIDS People Draws Criticism

A dating club, for people living with HIV/Aids, started by Luta Shaba, an HIV-positive Zimbabwean lawyer is drawing flak from Aids activists in the country. //

Shaba says she dreams of seeing people living with the virus, engage in relationships and use recommended safe sex methods. She says many of her clients appreciate her for the idea, as there is still a large social stigma attached to HIV/Aids. Her club is a huge hit with up to six subscribers registering per day.

The founder of Public Personalities against Aids Trust, Tendayi Westerhof, says Shaba's club reinforces prejudices they are being challenged. "For people to say it's for HIV-positive people, I think it's discriminating because we want to encourage that when it's anything to do with HIV/Aids, we should deal with the infected and the affected and not to discriminate and say its exclusively for HIV-positive people," she said.

HIV/Aids has destroyed normal life in Zimbabwe. One in every five people is HIV-positive people and about 3 000 die of the disease every week.
