Ex-prisoners are found to die quicker than the general public. This was revealed by a research conducted by Dr Ingrid Binswanger, in the state of Washington//.

Among other reasons cited, drug overdose is said to be the primary cause. This is being followed by heart ailments, homicides, suicides, cancer, and smoking. This study was conducted among 26270 men and 3967 women.

Dr Binswanger, a researcher and an assistant professor at University of Colorado at Denver feels that similar situation may prevail in other states too. According to her a study conducted in Europe and Australia also had similar results.

These findings reiterate the need to focus on the welfare of such people. Government should help them with their health issues, find an employment and educate them. As these people do not get sufficient health care behind the bars, they have a very fragile physical and mental condition. If assistance is not rendered to ex-convicts, they might go back to their old ways.
