The Japanese Encephalitis germ has spread to most of the northern sections of Uttar Pradesh. The officials have reported 240 deaths but this maybe even higher according to reports from health officials.

On Saturday the medical officials were worried and said // the actual toll "is bound to be much higher" as many deaths may not have been reported at all.

So far over 900 patients have been admitted to different government hospitals and dispensaries in the state since the disease broke out in Gorakhpur a month ago.

One health official said: “Our figures are collected only from government hospitals, but a good number of patients go to private hospitals, while many perish in villages even without receiving any medical aid," Then there are quacks who handle some cases and have no clue what they are treating "so the actual number of deaths must be much higher."

According to K.P. Kushwaha, the doctor in charge of the special Encephalitis Unit set up at Gorakhpur Medical College, "With more than 280 patients in our two paediatric wards that have barely 130 beds, the situation is well imaginable. Still, we are doing our best to save as many lives as possible". The medicine department of the college had also accommodated about 67 patients, mostly adults. Doctors said that adult casualties were on the increase.

The doctor confessed, "Despite that we have at least 10 to 12 children dying every day."
