Elton John's Free AIDS Awareness Concert in Ukraine

Music legend Sir Elton John performed a free gig in Ukraine to promote HIV-Aids awareness. The show, which took place in the country's capital Kiev, was attended by 200,000 people including President Viktor Yushchenko and other politicians.

The charity performance of the singer whose Aids foundation already funds projects in Ukraine, has received mixed reviews from the people, with some appreciating it and others slamming the show.

According to the show bosses, the UK star's performance would increase AIDS awareness in the country that has one of the highest HIV infection rates in Europe with a new case every 10 minutes, reports the BBC.

The event which had the slogan 'Stop Aids before it stops us' has however been boycotted by a religious group that urged the people that the Grammy Award winning singer tried to promote his gay lifestyle through it.

There are around 400,000 HIV-positive people in Ukraine. According to experts AIDS is a major threat to the country, for it is estimated that within the next decade one in 50 people in Ukraine could be HIV-positive.
